MG is all set to launch its new SUV in the UK in 2016

MG has taken the curtains off on the first official images of its new MG GTS SUV. The family-sized 4×4 is due on sale in the UK in 2016, but sales are set to begin in China this May. Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), MG’s parent company unveiled the MG CS concept at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.

The production car previewed in these images confirms that the CS concept was a reliable guide as to the styling direction MG intended to take with its first ever SUV. The MG GTS will go in sale in China with a 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine with 217bhp unit and 350Nm of torque for a 0-62mph time of around 8s.  Drive will be channeled via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox to either front- or four-wheel-drive mechanicals depending on the buyer’s preference.

MG claims that the GTS rides on a new scalable SUV platform developed by SAIC and this could point to an expansion of the MG SUV line-up in the future. Its main rivals will be Kia’s Sportage and Honda’s CR-V and it is expected that MG will undercut these mainstream players on price.

Additional engine options, including a 1.8-litre diesel, will join the range before the GTS arrives in the UK early in 2016. Will you be interested a new SUV from MG? Let us know in the comments section below.
